The SA Olive Awards continues being one of the premier events on the South African olive industry’s calendar. It signifies the culmination of hard work and acknowledges the pursuit of excellence within the industry. A panel of local taste experts congregates on South African soil to judge and give CTC certified oils the gold, silver or bronze stamp of taste excellence. Olives are traditionally grown in areas with a Mediterranean type of climate to which the olive tree is ideally adapted. Such regions are typified by relatively cool winters where frost seldom occurs, by hot dry summers and an average annual rainfall of around 800 mm. Olives will also thrive under irrigation in drier areas. It is estimated that 2000-3000 litres of water are required for every litre of olive oil produced.
