Absa Top 10 Winner: Andante Intenso Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Name: Andante Intenso Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Style:
 Intense
Cultivars: Nocellara del Belice (monocultivar).
Litres Produced: 3500 litres

About Porterville Olives:
Wêreldsgeluk Olive Estate, is situated near Porterville, Western Cape. The first trees were planted in March 2006, and the first Nocellara in June 2006. Further orchards devoted to this cultivar were planted from 2016 to 2018. In total, there are now 36 hectares under cultivation at Wêreldsgeluk, in an intensive system, with about 34 500 trees of 8 cultivars.

Producer History:
The first olive oil was made on the farm in 2010. Cultivation, harvest timing and milling are directed at producing  premium quality EVOO, with a focus on complex, harmonious flavours, and maximising biophenols for their extraordinary culinary and health benefits.

Oil Maker & 2018 Harvest:
The 2018 Andante Intenso was made by Willie Duminy, assisted by Jan Hendrik Basson. Nocellara was selected as a cultivar for Wêreldsgeluk due to perceived climatic and general similarities with its heritage area in Sicily, where it has reportedly been cultivated for 2400 years. The 2018 Nocellara crop quality was one of the best since this cultivar came into production. Large, healthy fruit were harvested in the green-turning light yellow-green phase, although production remained relatively shy at a bit less than 7 tons per hectare. Oil yield was slightly above average for this cultivar, at 16%.

Tasting Notes:
Fresh green herbaceous aromas, and flavours of artichokes, rucola, green tomato and fresh walnuts. Balanced bitterness with a long tingling green-chilli finish. Complex, balanced, persistent and harmonious.

Pairing:
As a finishing oil with roasted and grilled meats (like bistecca Fiorentina), game, rocket salad, tomato-based pasta dishes, green beans (steamed green beans, with dry-roasted flaked almonds), pulses and stews. Excellent in baking (e.g. orange, almond flour and olive oil cake); divine over vanilla ice cream with a twist of rock salt.

Where to Buy:
Distributors: The Olive Branch Deli; Giovanni’s; Woolworth’s.
